Safety Metrics
At General Cable, we have adopted the vision of Zero & Beyond. Zero accidents, because nothing else is acceptable. To accomplish this, we must focus on the elimination of unsafe conditions and unsafe acts, with ownership and accountability by all associates, both hourly and management. As we ask our associates to consider the consequences of their actions prior to performing a task at work, at home or in their community, we must be sure we are making safety our first priority every day. We track our results, and if an accident occurs, we investigate the root cause and take the necessary corrective action to prevent it from happening again. | NORTH AMERICA | EUROPE & MED | REST OF WORLD | GLOBAL TOTAL | |
| Total Recordable Injury Rate | 1.10 | 1.51 | 0.42 | 1.17 |
| Lost Workday Incident Rate | .76 | 1.48 | 0.33 | 0.86 |
In addition to tracking the OSHA Recordable Incident Rate and the Lost Workday Case Incident Rate, General Cable associates perform formal job safety observations to identify unsafe behaviors and reinforce positive safety behaviors. They also participate in regularly scheduled safety inspections. In 2011, more than 2,912 General Cable associates conducted job safety observations and safety inspections. By identifying unsafe behaviors and conditions, the Company was able to take the appropriate actions to prevent many accidents or incidents from occurring. A comprehensive global safety report that includes these “leading” indicators is distributed to General Cable’s leadership every month.
